Self-control theory, proposed by Michael Gottfredson and Travis Hirschi in A General Theory of Crime (1990), is a widely researched perspective in criminology focusing on individual differences in attention to the consequences of one’s actions as a general cause of delinquency, crime, and analogous behaviors. Introduction Control Theory, or Social Control Theory, states that a person’s inner and outer controls both work together to negate deviant tendencies. It is proposed that for young people, a key aspect of social control is found within the family, particularly through interactions with and feelings towards parents.
